Workshop Overview
This workshop is ideal for educators, leaders, curriculum coordinators and coaches who want to explore how service learning can provide strategies and tools for student engagement, deep learning, and active global citizenship.
The aim of this 2-day workshop is to provide an opportunity for all educators (new to service learning or more experienced) to connect, share, and learn. Several themed sessions within the schedule will allow for participants to discover how to deepen and frame their curricular service learning experiences.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- understand and use deep listening protocols as a tool for authentic community engagement and service learning reflections
- identify where service learning can be embedded into the curriculum in purposeful and impactful ways
- glean ideas and best practices from exemplar experiences
- plan service learning experiences (action and engagement) related to current or upcoming units of study
- apply service learning assessment tools to classroom and school practices to identify how to develop a robust and inclusive program
Workshop Preparations
The facilitator will survey each participant to understand their expectations, assess familiarity with proposed content, and identify case material for all activities and resources. Participants should also prepare for the workshop by listening to this podcast episode from the International School Podcast about service learning and global citizenship.

Module 3 - Assessing Service Learning
- Embedding service learning in the curriculum leads to deep engagement and learning, and there are various approaches to assessing what students do, think, say and write in relation to their service learning experiences. In this module, we'll assess some exemplar approaches and ideate about how to assess service learning.
Module 4 - Using AI Tools for Service Learning Planning and Assessment
- AI tools like ChatGPT can be effective and efficient at helping us plan units, lessons and assessments for service learning and active global citizenship. In this module, we'll experiment with prompts and various AI tools, and we'll also spend the last part of our module consolidating our learning from the 2-day workshop.
Two weeks after the workshop:
Two weeks after the workshop, we will facilitate a group check-in and coaching call to deepen application of strategies, ideas and resources from the workshop, and to reflect on progress, share insights, and discuss questions related to the curriculum design of service learning experiences. This call will serve as a valuable platform for ongoing support, collaboration and learning from and with peers who attended the workshop. Participants will also have the opportunity to join an online community of service learning educators to engage in ongoing dialogue and networking.
